Winkler: Believe me, like everybody else, I had no idea that there was such a thing as upper limb spasticity, and I got a crash course when my mother had a stroke and then was diagnosed. What I learned was that it was a debilitating neurological condition where muscles in the elbow, the wrist and the fingers become stiff and tight, and they take away from your ability to do everyday things like putting on a shirt, buttoning a button, tying your own shoes, and washing your own hands – things that we just take for granted.

Winkler: About a million people suffer from spasticity including upper limb spasticity.

Diana Eisman: Jim's, uh, stroke, uh, severely affected his right side. And so, he wasn't able to do anything with his right arm at all, much less his hand.

Winkler: …when my mother was suffering there was no treatment so you just had to accept it. Now, there are solutions.

Dr. Brashear: I would suggest for a patient suffering from upper limb spasticity that they inquire with their doctor as to whether or not it an be treated and what the options are. Um, certainly with the recent approval of, um, BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA), by the FDA, um, physicians, such as myself, have a, a broader, uh, toolbox to be able to care for patients.

Narrator: To help educate patients and caregivers about upper limb spasticity and the treatment options available, Allergan is launching the “Open Arms” campaign, an educational initiative to raise awareness of upper limb spasticity and treatment options such as BOTOX®. Along with Mr. Winkler, Allergan has joined forces with an esteemed coalition of national patient advocacy groups including National Stroke Association, United Cerebral Palsy, National Spinal Cord Injury Association, United Spinal Association and the Brain Injury Association of America.
